Change a Life. Donate a Car.
Frequently Asked Questions

1. What types of vehicles do you accept?

In general, we will gladly accept your donated car or truck if it is running. Even if your vehicle is not presently running, we will accept it if it can be put in running condition with small repairs, such as a new battery, a new starter or a tune-up. Your car does not need to have a current North Carolina State Inspection sticker. If you have a question about your particular car donation, please email us or call us at (919) 255-1325.

2. Is my car donation tax deductible?

Yes. Wheels4Hope has been granted 501(c)(3) charitable status by the IRS. Whether you can use the tax deduction depends on your filing status. Generally a taxpayer must itemize deductions in order to take the full benefit of the charitable deduction. We recommend that you consult a tax adviser if you have any question about the deduction.

3. How is the value of my donated car determined?

There are new regulations in place for the tax year 2005 for determining your deduction. Click here to see our Tax Deduction FAQ for more information about these these regulations and Wheels4Hope donations.

4. Must I get my car appraised to get a tax deduction?

No, unless its value is over $5,000. The $5,000 threshold is set by the IRS. We can arrange an independent appraisal for you. It is a relatively effortless process.

5. What will happen to my car after I donate it?

Our standard procedure is to take possession of your donated car, do an initial assessment of its roadworthiness, and then have a "shepherd" drive the car for about fifty miles. All of this is done using our dealer plate and under our insurance coverage. You can cancel your insurance and plates once we receive possession of the car. Assuming that your donated car appears to be a potential placement car, the shepherd will then take it to one of our outside mechanics. The mechanic will do a thorough mechanical inspection and report back to us. We do small repairs in-house and use our outside mechanics for major repairs. If a car is found to have a condition that might significantly limit its reliability for our recipients, we will sell the car at retail and use the proceeds to pay for repairs on other donated cars.

7. How do you differ from other car donation programs?

Most, but not all, car donation programs immediately sell the cars they receive, usually at wholesale, and give some portion of the proceeds to a charity. We are different in that we are dedicated to placing reliable donated cars with deserving families in the Research Triangle area.

8. How can I contact you to arrange to donate my car?

It's easy! You can use our on-line car donation form. Or you can send us an email. Or you can call us at (919) 255-1325.
